Wahkiakum County is located in Southwest Washington on the Columbia River. The main highway
through the county is State Road 4 (SR4) which connects to Interstate 5 at
Longview, WA and ends at Long Beach on the Washington coast.
Wakiakum County towns along SR4 from East to West are Cathlamet, Skamakawa,
Gray's River and Rosburg.
We hope you'll getaway and relax awhile... ...maybe overnight!
Downtown Cathlamet, with restaurants, coffee houses, and quaint shops, is within easy walking distance to a
waterfront park and full-service marina at the mouth of the Elochoman River where boats launch for salmon and
sturgeon fishing on the Columbia River and yachts and fishing boats can moor overnight.

Cathlamet is the second oldest town in Washington, with many interesting
historic sites to visit. The Wahkiakum County Historical Museum (photo above)
displays a "buy-boat" (a boat that once purchased salmon from gillnetters on the
Lower Columbia River) as well as a Shay locomotive used in the logging industry.

Take some time to explore Cathlamet! Visit an art gallery, browse gift and
antique shops, or relax in the local restaurants.
Don't forget to take home a souvenir! There's lots to choose from:
smoked fish gift packages, locally grown/naturally raised beef and lamb,
fresh vegetables and fruits, local arts and crafts,
books about the history of the region, and Lewis and Clark mementos.

Birdwatching, bicycling and discovering quaint churches and other older buildings are some of the relaxing pastimes on Puget Island,
just across the bridge from downtown Cathlamet on Highway 409 where the Puget Island-Westport ferry crosses into Oregon.
At least
3 movies were made in Cathlamet: Men of Honor (2000), Snow Falling on Cedars (1999), and Come See the Paradise (1990).
The movie sites are marked. From SR 4/Main Street, turn down toward the river onto Broadway and walk to the dock.
You'll see the signs about the movies on the buildings in that area.

And, speaking of birding - Southwest Washington is an excellent area for birding enthusiasts and experts, as well as people who simply
enjoy watching birds in the great outdoors. The Audubon Society has published several birding trail maps for the state of
Washington.

Southwest Loop of the Washington State Birding Trail or to order a printed map and brochure.

Skamokawa, Washington, site of the popular Wahkiakum County Fair in August,
is full of history, beauty, and wildlife. To begin your visit in this area, stop by the
River Life Interpretive Center (Redmen Hall) to learn more about the history of the region and life along the river.
The nearby Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge for the Columbian white-tailed deer
is a gateway to the Lower Columbia Estuary and is especially popular among kayak, canoeing, and wildlife enthusiasts,
who enjoy exploring along Steamboat Slough, Brooks Slough, and Skamokawa Creek.

the Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail in Wahkiakum County.
You'll be amazed at how much you can learn about Washington history, right here in Wahkiakum County.
This small county (population 4,000) maintains several historical museums and archives, outdoor sites with information kiosks,
and restaurants, shops, and lodging in historical buildings and homes.

Travel west from Longview along Scenic SR 4 and marvel at the big ships as they travel up and
down the Lower Columbia River in SW Washington. And keep an eye out for lots of older and beautiful barns and farms
along the backroads that connect with SR 4.
